Geodesic Explorations
Polyhedric forms have fascinated me for many years. My college thesis in 1994 examined the influence and potential of natural structure and form in design. D’Arcy Thomson’s writings on natural form opened up a wealth of scientific documentation that I have explored since then in several sculpture commissions. Influences from the science world include George Hart, Buckminster Fuller, Frei Otto and others who developed radical, engineered structures for everything from stadiums to educational toys.
More recent work has seen experiments with modular structural systems that can be extended in several directions through space. These components explore the potential and suitability of a material to enable a certain type of construction. Some structures have also housed light sources to illuminate the location or simply used to create a visually dynamic focal point.
